I was thinking about my Aunt Judy when I read this in a collection of short stories by Amy Hempel, “Ask a mother who has just lost a child, How many children do you have? “Four,” she will say, “–three,” and years later, “Three,” she will say, “–four.”

And a little later, “K tog rem st. Knit together remaining stitches.”
