Trigger Day

Wow, today has totally been a trigger day for missing Michael. I am not sure why. I didn’t do too bad during last week (funeral/anniversary of death week), but today… whew!

Publishing, Writing, Editing, Teaching

I submitted a short story to Ruminate. And now I wait.

Yes, that did just rhyme.

Seriously, I have a feeling about this one, but I don’t want to jinx myself in case anyone out there from R reads my blog. Then they might be like, “Well, she’s cocky, so we can’t publish her.” But, really, it’s not cockiness. It’s just a feeling. My gut tells me that this one is it, baby.

I also emailed the lovely people at R and asked if I could help edit or judge.

Finally, in the wonderful world of all that is writing, editing and publishing, I am going to be a creative nonfiction judge for Notes and Grace Notes.

In the wonderful but crazy world of teaching: I am teaching Research Writing next semester! Woot! So excited!

Reading: John Green’s Paper Towns. Yay Nerdfighters!

Where are all the good books?

So, I am wondering why all of my favorite authors currently have nothing new published. Are all of the books currently lost in the annals of the editing world? Where are my books when I need them? Without them, of course, I feel compelled to read “canon-esque” stuff. And I am not in a canon-esque reading mood. I WANT BOOKS! NOW!

Write, people, write (in no particular order):

Dee Henderson

Britta Coleman

Richard Russo

John Cheever (Yes, I know there is a bit of a glitch with this one. But, here I am going to assume that writers can write from Heaven).

Liam Callanan

Lori Wick

Amanda Davis (Again, I know there is a problem with this. But, I would have to say that Amanda is one of my favorite 20th century woman writers).

Dave Eggers

Okay… so… write. Now. Faster. Please.

;) Signing out from the great state of Colorado ;)

Colorado State

So, I have recently started researching Colorado State. This would mean I would be pursuing an MFA and not a PhD.

Pros:

Stronger community (they have potlucks before readings and receptions afterwards). These people are community crazy. Also, their students published a guide to the MFA program called “The Book” which is very extensive. Impressive!

Cheaper. Though, I would have to take travelling into account. It’s farther away.

Shorter length of time. This could be a con, too. I like school ;) I don’t really WANT to leave.

NO GRE!!!

Easier to get into. Also, could be a con. And here, too, I am just assuming. But I have heard that DU is wicked difficult to get into.

Cons:

Not as prestigious.

There’s just something about the feeling that I would get from having the PhD vs. the MFA. Of course, it’s not like I am going to walk up to people and say, “Hey, I have a PhD and not an MFA.” Well, I might tell my dentist. But other than him, I’m pretty sure I won’t say anything.

Distance. An hour and fifteen minutes in the car both ways. That’s like a lot of hours in the car.

I am beginning to think a coin toss is in order. Or maybe I should put it on the 2008 voting ballot. Whichever gets the most votes is the school I go to. Of course, I still have to APPLY to both of them. And get ACCEPTED.

List of things to do:

APPLY to graduate school.

Get ACCEPTED into graduate school.

Eat some APPLES.

Meeting Brian Kiteley

Today I stalked met Brian Kiteley. I have this thing, on my days off, where I like to go to DU to grade. And maybe, sometimes, wonder the halls of the English department. I need my exercise, right? And I have learned to blend in quite well, if I carry my back pack with me.

Anyway, he likes soda. And he’s tall.

REJECTION!

I just got rejected by Hobart. It’s a good think that there are no large buildings around. Or ferris wheels. I’ve heard those work, too.

To Aaron: I still think you’re cool. But right now I hate your guts.

Thoughts On…

Publication:

“We’re sorry Elijah. You can’t be in the club. You didn’t get published. Maybe *I* was out doing the will of GOD!” http://www.studentlife.com

“I still had my first book which had 24 rejection letters. And to be clear, there are only 20 publishers in the industry and I had 24 rejection letters which means some people are writing you twice to make sure you get the point” Brad Meltzer.

PhD’s and Stuff:

“Ok so, how important is this whole business school thing anyway? I mean, so what if I never run my own inn? I like my job, I like my house, I like my life. And I certainly don’t want to be one of those people who’s never satisfied with what they have you know? I mean some people don’t have legs or arms. I have legs and arms. What more could I possibly want than legs and arms? I mean, I could take all the classes in the world, that’s still not going to give me what I already have.” Gilmore Girls

Fashion:
“Only a loser, and this is the VERY first rule of novel writing, wears what they wear on their author photo on the back of the book to their very first book signing”. Brad Meltzer

Uncle Bill and Aunt Judy did such a great job of picking out their gravestones I think. Beautiful–I love the truck on Mike’s–so him! And Janel’s is so simple and pretty. Good for a baby I think.

~Mark Harris~

But don’t cry for me
‘Cause I’m finally free

To run with the angels
On streets made of gold
To listen to stories of saints new and old
To worship our Maker
That’s where I’ll be
When you finally find me
